Syllabus
The program is structured with 2 Terms of courses and 1 final Term for the thesis or project. The final project can be done in the form of an internship in a company or in a research lab (we will facilitate such opportunities). Every Term lasts for 13 weeks:
- Fall term from mid-late September to mid December
- Spring term from late January to late April
- Final term (Capstone): mid-May to completion
First Term 
Cybersecurity Fundamentals and Governance
This foundational course provides a comprehensive overview of cybersecurity, focusing on risk management, advanced security technologies, and governance policies. It equips students with essential knowledge and skills to navigate the complex field of cybersecurity and make informed decisions about security governance. The course incorporates real-world applications through case studies for a comprehensive learning experience.
Network Security and Intrusion Detection
This course delves into network security challenges, covering threat detection and mitigation. The course explores intrusion detection systems, vulnerabilities, and protective measures, including firewalls and VPNs. Key topics include network security basics, attack vectors, and real-world case studies.
Legal Aspects and Compliance
This course explores the legal dimensions of cybersecurity, covering international and local cyber laws, compliance frameworks, and legal implications of cyber attacks. Topics include data protection, privacy laws, and case studies examining legal challenges in real-world incidents.
Cryptography and Secure Communications
This course explores the art of secure communication through cryptography. It covers encryption methods, key management, and real-world applications, including protocols like SSL and TLS. The course equips students with knowledge about symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, encryption algorithms (DES, AES, RSA), and practical case studies and applications of cryptography.
Data Analytics and Risk Management
The course emphasizes using data analytics in cybersecurity for risk assessment and management, covering techniques to analyze large data sets for threat detection, understanding vulnerabilities, and making informed risk-related decisions.
Second Term
Generative AI in Cybersecurity
This advanced course explores AI's role in shaping cybersecurity futures, covering generative AI models for security and threat detection, providing insights into potential applications and challenges.
Business Resilience and Response Strategies
This course highlights business resilience against cybersecurity threats, covering continuity strategies, disaster recovery, and effective responses to breaches for risk mitigation and ensuring seamless operations.
Behavioral Cybersecurity [Elective]
Exploring the human side of cybersecurity, this course addresses behavioral patterns contributing to vulnerabilities. It focuses on understanding psychology, cultivating a security-conscious culture, and mitigating human-related risks.
Cloud and IoT Security [Elective]
This course addresses security challenges and solutions in cloud computing and IoT, covering data integrity, privacy, and compliance techniques.
Secure Software Development [Elective]
This course introduces best practices for secure software development, emphasizing security throughout the software development lifecycle from design to deployment.
Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving [Elective]
This course fosters analytical skills for cybersecurity roles, focusing on critical assessment, strategy development, and problem-solving.
Leadership and Communication in Cybersecurity [Elective]
This course focuses on vital leadership and communication skills for cybersecurity professionals, emphasizing effective communication of security concerns, strategies, and solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
AI-Driven Forensic Analysis in Cybersecurity [Elective]
This course focuses on the application of AI in cyber forensic analysis. It covers techniques to utilise AI-driven tools for faster and more accurate forensic investigations after security incidents.
Third Term
Capstone Project and Dissertation
The Capstone Project and Dissertation, also known as the MSc thesis, is the pivotal project in the MSc program, aimed at consolidating acquired skills through a research endeavor. Collaborating with an OPIT supervisor, each student develops a project proposal realized in the final terms of their MSc program. The project entails research of industrial relevance, exploring methodological and/or practical aspects within program domains and beyond. Depending on the chosen exit point (30 or 60 ECTS), the MSc thesis workload is distributed over 1 or 2 terms, respectively. Students also have the opportunity to integrate internships with industrial partners to complement and complete their MSc thesis.
Entry requirements
Candidates for this MSc degree program should possess prior technical expertise. Applicants lacking the necessary technical background in cybersecurity will need to undergo an assessment to assess their foundational IT and cybersecurity competencies.
